We had a small puppy when she was first born that is nicknamed "Spirit." Since the initial days are so crucial, accidents can happen with larger dogs, and there is a lot of competition in the litter, we have had Joy, our 35 lb doodle, nurse her temporarily. She has grown larger quickly and is now similar in size to one of her sisters in Lucy's litter. She will be rejoining her siblings by the times the eyes open which is around two weeks! And all the puppies from both litters will be socializing and playing when older.
Lucy is an amazing mom and hyper vigilant of her puppies, especially during the first week or so, and then she relaxes. Trina, the human mom, can be similar. We initially gave Lucy a lot of wet food, during whelping, and with the initial days of intense feeding. She also gets raw meat treats daily. She is now back on her dry food and is starting to take short breaks which is very healthy. Lucy should be ready for a short walk soon!
Now is the time to place a deposit on our litter to confirm your spot, if you received an email from me. $300 can be sent via "friends and family" to paypal: trinapalosaari@gmail.com or to our address, provided by email. Deposits are fully refundable until you choose your puppy or not. Puppies are available around Memorial Day weekend. If you are on my list and did not receive an email yet, I am confirming the first seven spots in the litter and will be getting back to you soon, once I know where things stand.
The whelping box is covered with a blanket so that the temperature can be high enough for the puppies during the first few weeks. There is also a heating pad in one corner so the puppies can regulate how much heat they get. Moms love the "den" feel when giving birth and it allows for a safe breeding environment. There are safety rails in then box to prevent accidental smothering in the first few weeks. There are large, strong, cloth waterproof puppy pads at the bottom and then fleece blankets on top. We have had excellent success because we have utilized whelping boxes, and after 48 hours, if the puppies are doing well, they will most likely live a long and successful life.
