Bringing Home Your Puppy!

My daughter is sick so I will not be posting pictures til tomorrow!

You will be receiving a puppy care package when you pick up your puppy as listed below:

Puppy Care Package

  • 2-3 toys and a pillow with Sandy’s scent
  • Dog Ball
  • Grooming Comb
  • Charlee Bear Treats (for training and when wanting puppy to go in crate)
  • Other Treat Samples
  • Small Rawhides for Chewing
  • Bells for Potty Training
  • Puppy Food
  • Vet records for your Puppy

Remember that sticks, bark, pine cones, plastic water bottles, wash cloths and other items can be just as fun for puppy as expensive toys.
Cheese, hotdogs, small pieces of apples, peanutbutter and carrots are great treats also!

First Night
The first night or two may be the most difficult for your puppy. You can buy a heartbeat pillow or just use a teddy bear (with secure eyes) so that the puppy can sleep with something that resembles the other puppies. Be calm, loving and consistent and give him/her time to adjust and explore.

If your puppy doesn't eat much initially during the transition, try mixing some wet food with dry.

Potty Training Tips

  • Accidents can happen more during the first few days or weeks, during transition.
  • Praise your puppy when they go potty outside. Say "good potty", clap and/or give a treat.
  • Have your puppy on a regular schedule (with some flexibility built in). Some people like to schedule feeding drinking times in the kennel and then take the puppy outside afterwards.
  • Any time your puppy eats or drinks inside, they need to go out within 10-15 minutes.
  • Any time your puppy wakes up from a nap take him/her outside immediately to go potty.
  • After bath time, make sure puppy goes potty outside within 10 minutes.
  • Anytime you are leaving to go somewhere, take puppy back outside for 10 minutes for quick potty break and then into his/her kennel.
  • If puppy ever walks to the door, whines or sniffs around in a certain manner, then immediately let him/her out. A doggy door  or bell can be an excellent tool for puppy to utilize.
  • Your puppy is more likely to make potty mistakes early on when excited or nervous such as with new guests or another dog visiting.
  • Do not scold or punish puppy for potty mistakes because it causes anxiety and more problems. Just kindly take puppy outside and then clean up the mess with Nature's Miracle.
  • Research using a bell by the door if you would like your puppy to give you a signal. I do provide bells in your care package.
  • It is not recommended to put food in the kennel overnight or when puppy is there for a longer period of time. Every dog is different though. Frankie liked to eat in his kennel overnight. Initially, if you wake up in the middle of the night, let puppy out for 5 minutes. He/she will go potty quick and it's a kind reliever.

  • Our preference is to not use puppy pads in preparation for what each owner prefers. Some people like them because it cuts down on mess. Potty training on pads and outside will possibly take longer because the puppy learns to go inside and outside.  http://www.ezwhelp.com/BuyNewWhelpingPads.htm
  • Porch Potties can be great for situations such as condos or apartments during the rainy months when puppy is potty training.
